X-23 is a clone of the mutant Wolverine. She was created by HYDRA to become a skilled assassin but turned against her creators.
Biography[]
X-23 was created by Dr. Deborah Risman at the request of HYDRA. Twenty-two failures paved the way for the female clone of Wolverine.
She did not have a normal childhood, and instead trained for death and destruction. Because of this, she grew to resent Wolverine who she felt was responsible for her misery. Eventually she was put through the Weapon X process to have adamantium grafted to her bones just like Wolverine.
She eventually escaped and went to the Xavier Mansion to get her revenge. She knocked out each of the X-Men one by one until only Wolverine remained.
The confronted each other and he felt sorry for her. When S.H.I.E.L.D. arrived, Wolverine let her sneak away rather than turning her in.
Subsequently, she began to run from both HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D. She allowed herself and Wolverine to be captured as a ruse to get into HYDRA's headquarters. She faked her death when the headquarters was destroyed.
When Charles Xavier read the mind of Apocalypse, he saw a vision of her on the X-Men.
Powers and Abilities[]
Being a clone, X-23 has all the same powers as Wolverine. Due to her healing factor, she can recover from wounds much fast than anyone else and has enhanced stamina. She has greatly enhanced senses and can smell her opponents. One difference between her and Wolverine is that while he has three claws in each arm she has two claws in each arm and one in each foot.
As a result of the Weapon X process, her claws are covered in adamantium. This makes the claws razor sharp, able to cut through anything, and completely indestructible.
Relationships[]
Logan[]
Because of her terrible life, X-23 blamed Logan for her sufferings and tried to kill him. When Logan stopped her and got through to her, all of the pain X-23 had been holding back came out and she hugged him as she cried. X-23 loves Logan like a father, and is more than willing to protect him, like a daughter.
Background[]
X-23 was voiced by Andrea Libman in "X23" and Brittney Irvin in "Target X".
X-23 was an original character designed for the series. She was created entirely by Craig Kyle, though because Christopher Yost helped write the episode he is often given credit. She proved so popular that she was adapted into the comics and has become quite prominent.[1]
Greg Johnson and Boyd Kirkland were likely the ones who designed her as they were running the show.[2]
Kyle came up with the backstory for the character, writing a massive document that went into a great amount of detail. He did research into genetics and gender variation in the animal kingdom to get the character right.[3][4]
In the Comics[]
It is established that the reason she is a female clone of a male is because the Y chromosome recovered for the project was too damaged to use.
She eventually took on the name Laura Kinney. Kinney came from the doctor who created, became a surrogate mother, and raised her.
