During World War II, Bucky apparently died. However, he was found by Soviet soldiers and taken to Belarus, which was part of the Soviet Union. Arnim Zola, who fled the US and went to the Soviet Union on orders from the Soviets, brainwashed him and gave him a Soviet variant of the super soldier serum and a cybernetic arm, transforming him into the Winter Soldier the greatest weapon of the Soviet Union, during this time Bucky was in the Soviet Union army and the KGB, in addition to serving he also trained soldiers and spies and was also a spy, and Bucky was also in the Red Room of the KGB where he trained the Black Widow Natasha Romanoff, Bucky and Natasha dated had a quick love relationship, but their superiors forced them to break up, their minds were erased, but Natasha remembered Bucky many years later. Many years later Arnin Zola fled the Soviet Union, and returned to the USA where he again requested asylum from the American government and SHIELD, later Arnin Zola secretly met with the Red Skull, Red Skull knowing the information, sent Hydra agents who captured Bucky from Soviet Union and took him to a Hydra headquarters where Bucky was brainwashed again, this time to remove Soviet programming and install Hydra programming, thus ceasing to serve the Soviet Union and starting to serve Hydra commanded by Skull Red.

Ghosts of the Past[]

In modern times, Winter Soldier infiltrated the Avengers Tower and got hold of Red Skull for revenge, who was being imprisoned by the Avengers at the time. He used the Aven-Jet as a distraction to escape in the sewers, where Captain America followed him. Captain America tried to convince Winter Soldier to give Red Skull back, as he had valuable information on Thanos, but Winter Soldier knocked him out and escaped by climbing on a train. Captain America caught up with them, but Winter Soldier escaped in a drone and caused an explosion in the train tracks to slow him down.

Falcon used a tracking device that Black Widow had been put in the Red Skull to pin Winter Soldier's location to a missile silo in New Jersey. After pinning Red Skull to one of the missiles, Winter Soldier found the tracking device and destroyed it. Having realized the Avengers would come for him, Winter Soldier launched all the missiles in the base. Captain America and Falcon tracked down one of the missiles headed to Belarus, the place where Winter Soldier had been created, as the rest of the team dealt with the other missiles. On the missile, Captain America was confronted by Winter Soldier after trying to free Red Skull.

Captain America tried to make Winter Soldier understand that if he let the missiles hit their targets he would only finally become what Red Skull wanted, a villain. With twenty-seven seconds for impact, Winter Soldier escaped the missile. Captain America would manage to disarm it with the help of Falcon.
