Nasland continued to operate as Captain America in the 1950s during the time that Steve Rogers was frozen in ice at the bottom of the ocean.
In 1957 Nasland and Davis appeared as guests on M.O.D.O.K.'s talk show Organism to Organism. During their interview with M.O.D.O.K., Davis revealed some crude things the pair had done in their past and Nasland tackled Davis to shut him up. ("M.O.D.O.K.'s M.O.M.E.N.T.S.")
Background[]
This is the first version of William Nasland outside the comics.
In the Comics[]
During World War II William Nasland went by the Spirit of '76. Nasland wore a costume just like the one worn by Steve Rogers. Later, Nasland replaced the full head mask with a domino mask and a tricorne hat.
Nasland was a member of the Crusaders which was a superhero team that operated in London during World War II fighting Nazis. However, unknown to Nasland and the other heroes the man that recruited them into the Crusaders, Alfie, was himself a Nazi and he had formed the Crusaders to discredit the Invaders. Alfie convinced Nasland and the Crusaders that the Invaders were Nazis and the two teams clashed. However, the Invaders exposed and thwarted the assassination plot, and the Crusaders realized they had been duped. The Crusaders broke up as a team.
Following the supposed death of Steve Rogers and Bucky in 1945 President Harry Truman sought to keep the legend of Captain America alive and recruited William Nasland as the new Captain America. President Truman also partnered Nasland with Frank Davis, Jr. who was the new Bucky. On orders from President Truman, Nasland and Davis joined the Invaders.
William Nasland died stopping a mad scientist from replacing John F. Kennedy with an android duplicate.
