Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day of memoriam for the victims of the Holocaust. During the tragic events, the horrors of Nazi Germany lead by Adolf Hitler resulted in the estimated deaths of six million Jewish people, two million Romani, two-hundred fifty thousand mentally and physically disabled, and nine thousand homosexuals. The date was chosen for the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp by the army of the Soviet Union.
Fans of Marvel Comics will know that Erik Lehnsherr is a survivor of the Holocaust. Vitally important to his backstory, it was stated when he was first introduced that his wife and children were killed leaving him the only member of his family alive. Though as time went on he was changed to a child survivor with his parents having been killed. X-Men alluded to this backstory, never directly referencing it, in the episode "Deadly Reunions". X-Men: Evolution had Captain America and Wolverine liberate a young Erik from Auschwitz.
