Today marks the fifth anniversary of the premiere of Mad Max: Fury Road. The film follows the titular hero Mad Max in a post-apocalyptic wasteland as he is teams up with Imperator Furiosa in order to escape the evil Immortan Joe along with his prized "Five Wives."
The film is the fourth in the famed Mad Max series and a soft reboot of the franchise. It had been in development hell since 1997, facing a number of delays. It wasn't until director George Miller found success with the animated children's movie Happy Feet that he was able to move forward.
It was a massive success with fans and critics. It was the twenty-first highest grossing film of the year and the biggest money maker in the franchise. Critics praised the feminist themes while lauding the practical effects. It has been called one of the best films of the year and one of the greatest action movies of all time. It was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, while winning six. A fifth film is currently being developed along with a spin-off on Furiosa.
The film features the talents of Zoe Kravitz as one of Immortan Joe's wives Toast the Knowing.
