Today is the twentieth anniversary of the premiere of Galaxy Quest. The film follows the cast of a once-popular science fiction show after they are abducted by real aliens who have mistaken the show for reality and are tasked with defeating a threat to the galaxy.
The film is a humorous look at the Star Trek franchise. It parodies the tropes of The Original Series, behind the scenes relationships, and zeal of fans. This even extended into tie-in websites that were done in poor style similar to then-popular fan sites.
The film was a modest success at the box office and with critics. It was nominated for numerous awards winning several. It later became a cult hit, especially with Trekkies. It became so popular that fans actually ranked it as the seventh greatest Star Trek film. Many of the cast and crew involved in Star Trek praised the film including Jonathan Frakes, Tim Russ, and George Takei. The next series to premiere, Enterprise, would take many inspirations from the film especially in its main cast.
The film features the talents of Robin Sachs as primary villain Sarris.
