Today is the fifteenth anniversary of the premiere of Sin City. Based on the series of Dark Horse comics, the film follows a series of interconnected stories set in the film noir world of Sin City where average people try to survive in a corrupted world.
The film utilized emerging computer graphics technology to produce a nearly shot-for-shot adaptation of the comic book series, rather than adapting and interpreting the story. This produced the most faithful comic book adaptation both in terms of story and visuals. It was so close to the source that no screenwriter was credited, instead giving sole credit to comic book creator Frank Miller.
The film was a major success with fans and critics. It earned several times its budget at the box office and was the thirtieth highest grossing film of the year. It received high praise from critics who gave special mention to the visuals. It was nominated for numerous awards, winning several. It was followed by a sequel and currently has a television adaptation in development.
