The film was given a limited release and received plenty of critical praise. It was a box office success and, thanks to its incredibly modest budget, went on to be one of the highest grossing films of the year. The film propelled star Jon Heder to stardom. The Bravo network ranked it one of the top one-hundred comedy films ever made. It also spawned an animated series.
