Today marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the premiere of Constantine. Based on the DC Comics Hellblazer series, the film follows occult detective John Constantine as he exorcises demons back to Hell while helping a young detective learn the real circumstances of her twin sister's death.
The film received mixed reviews from fans and critics. It was a modest box office success, being the sixteenth highest grossing film of the year. Critics praised the visuals and the premise, but criticized the story and noted how similar it was to star Keanu Reeves's previous film The Matrix. It has since gained a cult following. A sequel was planned but nothing was developed while a reboot was reported but as of yet is undeveloped. It did lead the way for a short-lived live action television series that itself led to several appearances in the Arrowverse that included an animated web series.
The film features the talents of Djimon Hounsou as former witchdoctor and nightclub owner Papa Midnite.
