It is extremely destructive and powerful. Iron Man is also deadly accurate with the beam and can hit targets flying through the air.
Iron Man has a similar beams built into his gloves called repulsor beams. They are less powerful attacks though they consume less energy and can be fired more often.
It is possible, though not specified, that Iron Man uses the same or similar technology to fly with.
