Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is an upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It is set to be released on June 2nd, 2023. It is being made back-to-back with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Background
On November 27th, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Sony already had plans for a sequel and spinoff. Amy Pascal will return to produce. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg are expected to return though no deals have been made.[1]
Joaquim Dos Santos is currently set to direct the sequel with David Callaham writing. No details regarding the sequel were initially given other than that this film would plant seeds for one. Pascal said in a later interview that the sequel would feature the romance between Miles and Gwen, something this movie largely cut out of the original script. On November 1st, 2019, the sequel was given a release date of April 8th, 2022.[2] On April 19th, 2021, Sony officially confirmed Dos Santos as director along with Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson.[3] Thompson served as a production designer on the first film.
On December 4th, 2021 the title, and sequel, were officially announced[4] with Miller and Lord announcing they were returning.[5] It was given a release window of October 2022.
On April 21st, 2022, Deadline revealed that both the Across the Spider-Verse films would be delayed. This film was given a new release date of June 2nd, 2023.[6]
On April 25th, 2022 at CinemaCon, Sony announced that the title was dropped the Part One with the third film being changed to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.[7]

When asked on Twitter, Phil Lord revealed that Takuya Yamashiro, the Japanese Spider-Man from the 1978 series, had been designed.[11] During the theatrical release of the first film, Lord said on Twitter, though it may have been a joke, that if the film made $200 million domestically he would put the Japanese Spider-Man into the sequel. This Spider-Man did play a part in the Spider-Verse comics and his Leopardon was included as a drawing of Miles.[12] He did not confirm whether the character was actually in the movie or not.
On June 13th, 2022, Sony Animation appeared at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival to discuss the film. There they announced that Jorma Taccone, who played Green Goblin in the first film, would play villain Vulture,[13] Shea Whigham would play Gwen's father Captain George Stacy,[14] and Rachel Dratch would play a school counselor,[15] and Jason Schwartzman would play villain Spot.[16] Whigham follows Big Hero 6 actor James Cromwell as Captain Stacy, who played the role in the live-action film Spider-Man 3.
Trivia
- Shea Whigham, who plays George Stacy, shares the same birthday as Clancy Brown, who played George Stacy on The Spectacular Spider-Man, on January 5th though Whigham was born exactly ten years later.
