A Sentinel is a large, powerful robot designed and built by the United States government. Their purpose was to counter possible mutant threats.

History[]
The Sentinels were designed by Bolivar Trask and built in secret.
The group under Trask kidnapped Wolverine of the X-Men. They had him fight their prototype Sentinel as a test.
The X-Men and Brotherhood of Mutants joined together to find Wolverine. Magneto and his Acolytes arrived at the test facility and forced Wolverine and the Sentinel to the surface.
Nearby media recorded the battle between the mutants and Sentinel, revealing their presence to the world.
Scarlet Witch countered Magneto's powers so he could not defend himself. Before the remains of the prototype crashed on him, Quicksilver saved his father.
Some time later, S.H.I.E.L.D. took control of the project. They upgraded them and sent them against Apocalypse in Egypt. However, the ancient mutant proved too much and turned the robots against their controllers.
When Charles Xavier scanned Apocalypse's mind, he saw a future where more Sentinels were led by a strange upgraded Sentinel.
