Jason Wyngarde is a mutant who joined and lead the Inner Circle Club under the name Mastermind.

Jason Wyngarde, also known as Mastermind, is a mutant with the power to create illusions affecting all senses through telepathy. At some point he became the leader of the Inner Circle Club, a group of mutant supremacists who uses their abilities to gain power and money while hiding their nature as mutants. At some point, Jason made the acquaintance of fellow psychic Emma Frost, and, realizing that her telepathic powers could be of use to his organization, he offered her to join. The two of them became partners and lovers but Frost eventually decided to leave when one of their rich victims committed suicide following Frost mind controlling him. Jason wasn't happy about this and held a grudge towards her.
Later, Mastermind and the rest of the Inner Circle learned about Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force inside of her and decided to use it to to become rulers of a world dominated by mutants. The plan somehow failed as Jean Grey became uncontrollable, forcing the X-Men to kill her to prevent the end of the world. Seeing an opportunity to get back at Frost for leaving him, Mastermind casted an illusion of Emma Frost during the chaos, hoping that the X-Men would eventually kill her in retaliation for causing the death of their friend.
Some time later, he learned about Takeo Sasaki, the son of Professor Xavier and a mutant with incredibly powerful reality warping powers. Planning to use the boy's abilities to rule the word, he infiltrated the lab of Yui Sasaki, Takeo's mother, in Japan, passing himself off as a scientist, disguising himself with his powers and taking the name Jun Sanada. His fellow Inner Circle members, Rat, Marsh, and Neuron following him to Japan. As Jun Sanada, he spent months tormenting Takeo with illusions in order to brainwash him, without any suspicion from Takeo's mother. He then hired the U-Men and got them to believe he was working with them, using them as a cover while he planned to take control of humanity.
During a battle in the laboratory of Yui, his former teammate Emma Frost used her diamond form, which caused her to see his true face since her form blocked psychic abilities. Frost revealed her background with Mastermind to the X-Men and upon their next encounter engaged him in a hand-to-hand fight with him while the Inner Circle battled the X-Men. In the meantime, Mastermind created a massive illusion to prevent Xavier from joining his X-Men in Japan. Xavier however, managed to fight it off.
Takeo was then found by the X-Men and a fight ensued. Marsh and Neuron held off the X-Men while Mastermind awoke Takeo. When the two evil mutants were defeated, Mastermind used the image of Jean Grey to distract Cyclops. The X-Man however managed to fend off the illusion and the heroes prepared to subdue Mastermind. He ordered Takeo to defeat the X-Men for him but his mistreatment of the boy backfired when an unstable Takeo got out of control and killed him with his powers.

Mastermind was voiced by Haruhiko Jo in the Japanese version and Travis Willingham in the English version. Willingham reprised the role of Mastermind in the game Lego Marvel Super Heroes.
