X-Men is the longest running animated series based on Marvel Comics with seventy-six episodes across five seasons. The series aired from October 31, 1992 to September 20, 1997. It is the first of eight interconnected series that spanned the 1990s. The first attempt at a series came with the test pilot "Pryde of the X-Men". That pilot failed to get a series, but garnered enough attention for another attempt. Fox Kids vice-chairman Margaret Loesch executive Sidney Iwanter brought on Saban Entertainment to produce the series. Saban hired Eric Lewald to be the executive story producer who hired comic book fans Will Meugniot, Larry Houston, and Eric's wife Julia. Initially Stan Lee wanted the stories to be closer to the original stories of the 1960s, with himself as narrator, but as the series went forward his involvement waned and the series went more for the intensity of the 1970s and 1980s. The series was one of the first to include long story arcs that would span numerous episodes and seasons, something unheard of at the time. The producers wanted to emulate the storytelling techniques of the comics, though ironically it was Marvel themselves who provided the most pushback against the idea. The show follows X-Men members Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Gambit, Rogue, Storm, and Jubilee. They fought popular enemies like Magneto, Graydon Creed, Mystique, Mister Sinister, Apocalypse, the Brotherhood of Mutants, Mystique, Sentinels, Shadow King, and Phoenix. They also came across many guest stars such as the Morlocks, Alpha Flight, X-Factor, Shi'ar, Starjammers, Captain America, and Ms. Marvel. The series, along with Spider-Man, was among the first to faithfully adapt some of the most iconic story arcs from the comics including Days of Future Past, Age of Apocalypse, and The Dark Phoenix Saga. For a show marketed for children, the series dealt with many serious issues. The Legacy Virus was used in place of the AIDS epidemic that was very big at the time. Magneto's history in the Holocaust was dealt with several times. The Friends of Humanity dealt with prejudice and hatred in ways other shows shied away from. Death was seen quite frankly, as the character of Morph was originally created as "redshirt" and intended only to die to show the dangers the team faced. Even homosexuality was dealt with as shapeshifters Mystique and Morph would flirt with members of the same sex while in another form. The series has been very well received and continues a massive following. It commonly ranks highly among animated series and superhero shows. Cathal J. Dodd's work as Wolverine has been one of the most iconic adaptations of the character. Live-action X-Men film director Bryan Singer used the series as research while developing his productions, and had Beast actor George Buza cameo in the first film. Recently, Marvel Entertainment decided to return to the show with a comic series titled X-Men '92. This is part of the current Secret Wars that spans many famous alternate universes. Eric and Julia Lewald wrote the book Previously on X-Men: The Making of an Animated Series providing a look behind-the-scenes of the series for the show's twenty-fifth anniversary.
