Featured Article "Innocent Blood" is the fifth episode of The Incredible Hulk. Originally airing on October 6, 1996, this was the first full appearance of Ghost Rider, being the unspecified Daniel Ketch version, after making a cameo appearance on X-Men and a minor brief Fantastic Four. Ghost Rider was voiced by Richard Grieco continuing the character's appearance from the Fantastic Four episode "When Calls Galactus". Outside of Chicago, Rick Jones arrives at the ruins of a small town that was destroyed by Hulk. Ghost Rider is drawn to the area sensing that innocent blood has been spilled. Both bikers make their way to the Windy City, and Rick notes that the flaming skeleton leaves behind a trail of sulfur or, as what the Bible calls it, brimstone. Meanwhile, Bruce Banner seeks rest in a soup kitchen when Ghost Rider's powers inadvertently cause the steam pipes to explode. Bruce transforms and tries to save the nun inside, but Ghost Rider intervenes fearing that the giant is hurting her. Hulk flees while Ghost Rider saves the woman. At Gamma Base, Betty Ross and Doc Samson test a tranquilizer ray in an attempt to cure Bruce of Hulk, but find it lethal to those affected by gamma radiation. General Thaddeus Ross and Major Glenn Talbot want to use it anyways, but Betty stops them. However, the elder Ross orders Talbot to go to Chicago with the ray anyways when the two scientists leave. Leader spies on them and has Gargoyle send his surveillance bugs to the city to get Hulk's DNA before they can kill him. Betty finds out, berates her father, and goes to Chicago with Doc Samson before Talbot can kill anyone. Rick continues following Ghost Rider's trail, leaping over a police barricade to get to his friend. When the supernatural superhero comes close to the jade giant, Rick stops him and tries to explain that Hulk is innocent. Rick's ability to withstand the hero's ghost flames impresses Ghost Rider enough to let the boy tag along. Talbot finds Hulk and attacks with a helicopter. Hulk strikes back and they crash into an apartment building. While Hulk becomes distracted, Talbot sneaks up and uses the tranquilizer ray. Hulk causes the building to collapse and Ghost Rider saves Talbot. However, Hulk is trapped under the debris transforming back into Bruce when the ray's effects will kill him. Ghost Rider uses his Penance Stare on Talbot and learns that the major is responsible and Hulk really is innocent. Rick fakes being attacked so Bruce will transform so he can escape. He tries to attack Ghost Rider, but the ray's effect weakens him too much. After Betty and Samson arrive, Ghost Rider decides to make Hulk angrier than he has ever been so he can burn through the poison himself. He is overwhelmed by Hulk's rage, but it's still not enough to cure him. Samson joins the fight but he too is not strong enough. Eventually Betty and Rick tell Hulk that they hate and fear him, claiming he has ruined their lives. With his friends turning against him, Hulk's rage grows so he overcomes the ray's effect. Hulk flees not realizing that they were just lying and feeling no one loves him. Ghost Rider applauds their efforts saying that his heart will heal. Leader finally gets his sample of Hulk's DNA so he can create the gamma warriors.
