Edward Asner was a film and television actor and former President of the Screen Actors Guild. Asner is known as Spider-Man's J. Jonah Jameson, editor of The Daily Bugle. His prominent role in the earlier series got him the part of Officer Barr on Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and Ben Parker on The Spectacular Spider-Man. He is primarily remembered for his role as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off series, Lou Grant.
He was born on November 15th, 1929 as Yitzhak Edward Asner in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the youngest of five children. His father, Morris, ran a second-hand shop while his mother, Lizzie, was a housewife. He was raised in the Orthodox Jewish religion. In high school he participated in sports while also being the editor of his school's newspaper. His basketball team was so good they toured Europe. He attended the University of Chicago before joining the United States Army Signal Corps.
After his service he joined the Playwrights Theatre Company in Chicago before moving to New York City. Due to his resemblance to certain politicians in the Soviet Union, Asner found himself a constant figure on television playing various villain characters. The biggest role of his career came in 1970 when he was cast on The Mary Tyler Moore Show as ornery but lovable editor Lou Grant. The series lasted until 1979 and earned him numerous awards and nominations. When the series ended he got his own spin-off with Lou Grant. While the previous series was a half-hour comedic sitcom the following series was an hour-long drama. The spin-off was also well regarded and earned him several more awards, making him the only actor to win an Emmy for playing the same character on both a comedy and drama. In 1977, he appeared as the slaver ship captain in the iconic miniseries Roots, garnering him even more critical praise.
In the 1990s, Asner got into voice acting. He had a major role as Hudson on the famed Disney series Gargoyles. He played Roland Daggett on Batman: The Animated Series as well as Granny Goodness on Superman: The Animated Series. He voiced Jabba the Hutt on the radio version of Star Wars. In a tribute to his famed role as Lou Grant, he was cast as famed newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson on Spider-Man. He appeared throughout the series, including alternate universe versions. The role earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination. The role then got him cast as Officer Barr in Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and Uncle Ben in The Spectacular Spider-Man. He later gained widespread praise playing the elderly Carl Fredricksen in Pixar Animation Studios's Up. Though his live action appearances never gained the same acclaim as his earlier works, he did get praise for playing Santa Claus in the Jon Favreau directed feature Elf.
Asner also dabbled in politics when, in 1980, he was elected the president of the Screen Actors Guild. His time was mired in controversy due to his penchant for making public statements about the United States government. He criticized the United States' involvement in El Salvador, the industry's labor standards, and fought for unions. It is rumored that his outspoken statements was responsible for the cancellation of Lou Grant despite the high ratings and critical acclaim. He criticized actor-turned-president Ronald Reagan and was vocally against apartheid in South Africa. He fought with Reagan supporter Charlton Heston over combining SAG with the Screen Extras Guild, which eventually happened in 1992. He battled for improving employment and compensation conditions for actors and championed the combination of SAG with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which also happened in 2012. He was reelected president in 1983 in a landslide, but stepped down in 1985. He would continue defending his activism calling it a necessity not a luxury.
In 1959 he married Nancy Sykes. They had three children together, the twins Matthew and Liza as well as Kate. However, in 1987 he had a son named Charles with Carol Jean Vogelman causing him to divorce Sykes. He later married producer Cindy Gilmore in 1998 but once again divorced in 2007. His nephew Gavin Newsom is currently the governor of California.
He passed away on August 29th, 2021 at the age of ninety-one surrounded by his family. He was survived by his four children.
