"The Party" is the eighth episode of Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, though the first episode produced and in some regions the first to air. Being the first made, the visual aesthetics pioneered in this episode influenced the look of the series. Most famously, a visual transition featuring a martini glass, which at the time was the most complex Mainframe Entertainment ever did, began a tradition in every episode that was dubbed the "Martini Shot." The episode originally aired after its follow-up "When Sparks Fly".
It's just another day in New York with Spider-Man (Neil Patrick Harris) patrolling the city. Meanwhile, Max Dillon (Ethan Embry) has been kidnapped and blindfolded by three fraternity guys who dislike him for being a geek. Max freaks out and manages to drive the car away. Spider-Man saves him from sinking into wet cement. Later, Peter Parker arrives late for class and his teacher (Cree Summer) berates him for always being late. Peter meets with Harry Osborn (Ian Ziering) and Mary Jane Watson (Lisa Loeb) who invite him to a fraternity party that night. However, Peter needs to study for class and turns them down. He promises to go at some point but his two friends doubt he'll show up.
Peter meets Max and the two talk about his kidnapping. They are interrupted by Doug Reisman (Jeff Fischer) and his two friends, the three who kidnapped Max and are also hosting the party. Max brushes off Peter and approaches the three hoping to pledge to their frat, not noticing Doug's obvious disdain for him. Peter tries to interrupt but is involved in a fight, and afterwards Max blows him off. That night at their apartment, Harry reveals to Peter that he and Mary Jane have a bet to whether he will show up to the party or not, and Mary Jane is betting for Peter. At the party, Max begins to flirt with a beautiful woman named Sally Johnson (Julie Nathanson) when the fraternity brothers take him to their inner sanctum. During the ceremony they deny his pledge then pelt him with paintballs.
Max runs out into the party where he is humiliated then leaves the frat house. He runs out into the storm and climbs to a billboard. He breaks it spraying neon gas on him. The billboard is struck by lighting blasting Max back where he is struck by a second bolt transforming him into a being of pure electricity. Max, now Electro, returns to the party and attacks the guests. Peter, discussing whether the X-Men go to parties, sees the attack and goes to help. Electro finds Doug and electrocutes him. Spider-Man arrives too late to save him and attacks, but finds himself overwhelmed by Electro's power and wrath. The hero eventually discovers that Electro is his friend Max, who will not be talked down or reasoned with. Spider-Man is eventually forced to plug a ground wire into him apparently killing him. The police chase him away and Peter is saddened at what he had to do to his friend. At Doug's grave Peter, Harry, and Mary Jane lament that while the jock was a jerk he didn't deserve to die. Peter says he did attend the party and Mary Jane wins the bet. When the three leave, Electro inhabits a nearby lamppost revealing that he is still alive.
