Marie Severin (born August 21, 1929; died August 29, 2018) was a comic book artist and colorist. She worked for a number of comic book companies, and is best remembered for helping to create the Jessica Drew character of Spider-Woman. She is acknowledged for her contributions on Spider-Woman and Ultimate Spider-Man.

Biography[]

Marie got her start working at EC Comics to help her brother John, who was also a comic book artist. She went to work on their war and infamous horror comics.

She briefly worked for Atlas Comics, the precursor to Marvel Comics. During an industry downturn, she went to work at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

During the Silver Age, she returned to Marvel and began working on Doctor Strange. She was the head colorist until 1972. During the 1980s she worked at Marvel's Special Projects division providing work on their non-comic book works including Fraggle Rock and Muppet Babies.

At DC Comics, she worked on Batman Black and White, Bizarro Comics, Looney Tunes, Pinky and the Brain, Supergirl Plus, and Superman Adventures.

Other work she did at Marvel include 2099 Unlimited, The Amazing Spider-Man, Astonishing Tales, The A-Team, Battlestar Galactica, Captain America, Casper, Conan the Barbarian, Damage Control, The Defenders, Doc Savage, Ewoks, Fantastic Four, G. I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Howard the Duck, The Hulk, The Incredible Hulk, The Invaders, Iron Fist, Iron Man, Kull the Conqueror, Logan's Run, Mighty Mouse, Moon Knight Special, Ms. Marvel, Not Brand Echh, Nova, Power Man, Power Man and Iron Fist, Punisher 2099, Red Sonja, The Smurfs, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Star Wars, Strange Tales, Sub-Mariner, Tales to Astonish, Tarzan, Thor, The Tomb of Dracula, Transformers: Generation 2, Web of Spider-Man, and What If...?.

She was named the Best Humor Penciler in 1974's Shazam Awards and won the Inkpot Award at 1988's San Diego Comic-Con. In 2001, she was inducted into the Will Eisner Comics Hall of Fame.

She passed away at the age of eighty-nine on August 29th, 2018, the same day as writer Gary Friedrich. This was following a stroke and move into a hospice. She was preceded by her brother John who died in 2012.[1]
