Biography[]
Ted Sallis and his wife Ellen were scientists that were working on a serum called Project Gladiator. Project Gladiator was intended to give enhanced strength and endurance to normal humans. However, Ellen betrayed Ted to A.I.M.. To keep Project Gladiator out of A.I.M.'s hands Ted burned all of his notes and injected himself with the only sample of the serum. As Ted fled, he was chased by A.I.M. operatives into a swamp where his car got stuck in the mud. Fleeing his stuck car, Sallis collapsed in the mire. The Project Gladiator serum in Ted's body somehow mixed with the chemicals in the swamp and turned him into a giant plant monster that would later become known as Man-Thing. Man-Thing learned that he was now drawn to anyone displaying extreme emotions, especially fear. Man-Thing also learned that whenever anyone felt fear in his presence, his body would secrete an acid. The acid would only react to those that felt fear and would burn at Man-Thing's touch.
Years later, following a battle with Mojo on Mojoworld, Jean Grey and Storm were teleported to the swamps of Florida. Shortly after they arrived that were attacked by a group of rednecks. However, Man-Thing arrived and burned the attackers with his power. Jean read Man-Thing's mind and learned that his touch would not harm them as long as they didn't fear him. Man-Thing then returned to the swamp.
As Jean and Storm made their way to a small town, they discovered that the townspeople were under the control of a demon named D'Spayre who was working for another demon named the Dweller-in-Darkness. As Storm and Jean fought D'Spayre, Man-Thing was drawn to their strong emotions. Man-Thing grabbed D'Spayre by his face and the fear he felt caused him to burn. Upon realizing that he had failed the Dweller-in-Darkness, D'Spayre teleported away. Jean hugged Man-Thing who then returned to the swamp.
