It is possible that the lion species is descended from the sabretooth tiger, which had died out long ago except in the Savage Land.
At one point, Sergei Kravonoff killed a lion. He took the skin and made it into his vest.
While in Africa, Mariah Crawford was attacked by a group of lions. Sergei defended her but was hurt in the process. He then took on the name Kraven the Hunter.
