Johann Schmidt, better known as the Red Skull, was the leader of HYDRA during World War II.
Biography[]
During World War II, Red Skull came into possession of the Tesseract and HYDRA's head scientist, Arnim Zola, used it to power advanced weapons. In 1945, Red Skull launched his plan to use atomic weapons powered by the Tesseract to destroy various heavily populated cities in the United States. However, Captain America damaged the container holding the Tesseract and it fell. Red Skull grabbed the Tesseract. This caused the Tesseract to open a portal to Vormir and Red Skull was transported through it.
On Vormir, Red Skull was cursed into becoming the guardian of the Soul Stone as punishment for abusing the power of the Space Stone. Several decades later Thanos and Gamora went to Vormir in search of the Soul Stone and met the Red Skull. Red Skull informed Thanos that the only way to obtain the Soul Stone was the trade a soul for a soul. Reluctantly, Thanos threw Gamora off the cliff to her death and was given the Soul Stone.
In an alternate timeline, Red Skull was visited on Vormir by Black Widow and Hawkeye who had traveled into the past to get the Infinity Stones. Five years earlier Thanos used the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all life in the universe and the Avengers had traveled into the past to get the Infinity Stones to undo what Thanos had done. Red Skull told Hawkeye and Natasha that the only way to get the Soul Stone was to sacrifice something you loved. Red Skull watched on as Black Widow and Hawkeye decided to sacrifice themselves for the Stone, leading them to subdue each other with their weapons, until Black Widow was able to throw herself off the cliff to her death, allowing Hawkeye to obtain the Soul Stone. After using the Stones to defeat Thanos, Captain America returned the Soul Stone to Vormir.
