Johann Schmidt, better known as the Red Skull, was the leader of HYDRA during World War II.
Biography[]
Red Skull was the leader of a branch Nazi Germany called HYDRA which as Peggy Carter described it was Hitler's Supernatural Science division. Red Skull tracked down a powerful artifact called the Tesseract to a church called Castle Rock Tower in Tønsberg, Norway. When Red Skull found the box containing the Tesseract, which was hidden behind a carving of Yggdrasill, he had his HYDRA firing squad kill the church keeper.
However, after Strategic Scientific Reserve agent Peggy Carter became a Super Soldier she was able to retrieve the Tesseract from HYDRA scientist Arnim Zola and gave to Howard Stark. Stark used the Tesseract to power an armored suit for Steve Rogers. Peggy was put in command of a group of soldiers called the Howling Commandos and went on several successful missions against HYDRA.
After a string of successes for the Allied Forces at the hands of Peggy Carter, Hydra Stomper, and the Howling Commandos, Adolf Hitler sent Roeder to tell Johann Schmidt that he demanded his presence in Berlin. However, upon giving this message, Schmidt replied that Gods do not answer to normal men. Roeder laughed at Schmidt for calling himself a god and points out how he lost the Tesseract. Schmidt then shoots Roeder in the stomach and falls to the ground. As Schmidt kneeled over Roeder, he revealed that his face was really a realistic mask that was hiding his true appearance, that of a of a red skull-like figure. Before Roeder died, Red Skull told him that the Third Reich would fall and in its place HYDRA would rise up.
Red Skull learned that the Hydra Stomper armor was powered by the Tesseract and came up with a plan to get it back. Red Skull leaked false information that he would be traveling by train. When the Strategic Scientific Reserve got word of this they sent the Howling Commandos to capture him. However, as Hydra Stomper entered the train he saw that it was rigged with explosives. As the bombs went off Hydra Stomper was believed to have been killed. However, HYDRA recovered the Tesseract, the Hydra Stomper armor, and Steve Rogers who was still alive and brought him to the Red Skull's fortress Castle de Krake in Black Forest, Germany.
Red Skull used the Tesseract to open a portal to another dimension and through it came a tentacled monster Red Skull called the Champion of HYDRA. However, Red Skull was unable to control the creature. The Champion of HYDRA grabbed Red Skull with its giant tentacle and crushed him to death. The Champion of HYDRA was then defeated by Peggy Carter.
