James Barnes, nicknamed Bucky, was a partner to Captain America during World War II. In the present, Barnes was brainwashed into being an assassin called the Winter Soldier but broke free from those controlling him. Following the zombie outbreak, Barnes joined a small group of survivors.
Biography[]
Surviving[]
Following the outbreak of the quantum virus which turned most of Earth's population into zombies, James Barnes joined a group of survivors that consisted of Peter Parker, Hope van Dyne, Sharon Carter, Happy Hogan, and Kurt Goreshter. The group was later joined by Bruce Banner.
When Peter and Kurt were making an internet video called So You Wanna Survive the Zombie Apocalypse they said in their video that zombies were attracted to the body's natural odors, so you want to stay clean. While talking about this Kurt and Spider-Man surprised Barnes while he was in the shower. As Kurt leaped toward Barnes, he grabbed his throat with his metal arm. Barnes threatened to choke Kurt to death, but Peter convinced Barnes to let Kurt go.
Sometime later Barnes and the others were approached by Okoye who was in America looking for T'Challa who had gone missing. Okoye also told the others that a survivor camp at Camp Lehigh in New Jersey had claimed to have made progress on a cure for the quantum virus.
Battle at Grand Central Station[]
To get to Camp Lehigh, Barnes and the survivor group went to Grand Central Station. Okoye ordered Hope, Peter, and Bruce to hotwire a train. While they did that Okoye ordered Barnes and the others to stay put and guard the perimeter. While in the underground tunnels, Sharon communicated through an earpiece with Barnes and Okoye and told them that they had just been attacked by Hawkeye.
At that same moment Falcon, who was also a zombie, crashed through the window. Bucky immediately drew his weapon and began firing at Falcon while he flew around him and Okoye. However, Falcon divebombed Bucky and knocked him to the ground. Falcon then approached Barnes and was close to infecting him with the virus. However, Okoye sliced Falcon in half with her virbanium spear. Okoye apologized to Bucky for cutting Falcon in half because she knew that they were friends. Barnes replied that he should have been sad but he wasn't.
The End of the Line[]
Peter, Kurt, and Hope were finally able to get the train started and Bucky and the other survivors boarded it and started their journey to New Jersey. From another car, Bucky heard Sharon scream and ran to help her. As Bucky entered the car, he saw the zombified corps of Captain America standing over Sharon eating her alive. As Captain America saw Bucky the two of them ran at each other. Bucky fired at Cap with his automatic rifle, and Cap blocked the bullets with his shield.
The two former friends then ran toward each other and began to fight using hand-to-hand combat. Sharon, who was now a zombie, stood up and tried to bite Bucky. However, Bucky simply grabbed Sharon's face and pushed her back to the ground. Captain America threw his shield at Bucky. However, Bucky caught the shield and threw it back toward Cap. The shield hit Captain America's torso and split his body in half at the waist. Bucky then picked up the shield, put it on his back, and took it with him.
Battle at Camp Lehigh[]
As the train arrived at Camp Lehigh, everyone saw that the base was surrounded by a horde of zombies. Hope, who had been infected with the quantum virus during the attack on the train, realized that they only way for them to get inside Camp Lehigh safely was if she carried them. Hope grew giant sized, grabbed Bucky and the other survivors in her hands, and walked them toward Camp Lehigh past all the zombies. The zombies crawled on Hope and bit her, but she was able to get Bucky and everyone else to Camp Lehigh in one piece. However, Hope succumbed to her wounds and perished.
Inside Camp Lehigh, Bucky and the others were greeted by Vision. Vision told everyone that the reason the zombies hadn't entered the base was because they did not like the signal that was put out by the Mind Stone, and that the energy from the Mind Stone could be used as a cure for the quantum virus. Banner then said that they needed equipment to transmit the Mind Stone signal worldwide. However, Vision replied that the technology needed to accomplish the transmission did not exist yet. Okoye remarked that the advanced technology in Wakanda was capable of transmitting the Mind Stone signal worldwide. Bucky then began to search the base for a jet to fly to Wakanda.
As Bucky searched the base, he came across Wanda Maximoff, who was now a zombie, locked in a cell. As Bucky continued to look around, he found T'Challa who was missing a leg. From T'Challa, Bucky learned that there were no other survivors at Camp Lehigh. Instead, Vision was using the beacon to lure innocent people to Camp Lehigh to use them as food for Wanda. Bucky grabbed T'Challa and made his way back to the others where he held Vision at gunpoint and informed the others about how Vision was using survivors as food for Wanda.
Wanda quickly broke free from her cell and killed Kurt. As Bucky and the other survivors escaped the building, Wanda also killed Okoye. Vision collapsed the building on top of Wanda, but this was not enough to stop her. Vision ripped the Mind Stone from his head and gave it to Banner which also killed him. While Banner, Peter, T'Challa, and Scott Lang boarded a Quadjet, Bucky stayed behind to distract Wanda. However, Wanda levitated Bucky with her telekinesis and threw him far away. It is unknown if Bucky survived.
