James Barnes, nicknamed Bucky, was a friend of Steve Rogers and a member of the Howling Commandos.
Biography[]
Bucky was childhood friends with Steve Rogers. When World War II broke out Bucky enlisted in the Army and was placed in the 107th Infantry Regiment. However, the 107 ended up being captured by HYDRA while in Austria. Peggy Carter discovered where the 107 was being held and broke into the prison and freed Bucky along with the other captured soldiers. As Bucky, Peggy, and the others exited the weapons manufacturing facility they shot at the HYDRA soldiers. However, Bucky and the others were pinned down by HYDRA's tanks. Just then Steve Rogers flew in using and armored suit and took out the tanks. After the rescue of the 107th Infantry Regiment, Peggy Carter was made the leader of the this unit. Peggy, Steve, and the 107th, now nicknamed the Howling Commandos, went on various missions against HYDRA.
The Strategic Scientific Reserve eventually got intel that the Red Skull would be traveling by train. Bucky and the Howling Commandos were sent to ambush the train and capture Red Skull. This military operation was given the codename Operation: Where Eagles Dare. Steve used the Hydra Stomper armor to slow down the train and Peggy and the Howling Commandos ziplined from a mountain ledge to the top of the train.
Hydra Stomper was the first to enter the train. However, instead of finding the Red Skull, Steve saw that the train was rigged with explosives and realized that HYDRA had set a trap for them. As the train exploded, Bucky and the Howling Commandos jumped off the train to safety. However, Steve was at ground zero of the explosion and was believed to have been killed in the blast.
Realizing that this might be their last chance to stop HYDRA, Bucky, the Howling Commandos, and Howard Stark launched at all out assault on the Red Skull's fortress Castle de Krake. Bucky and the Howling Commandos discovered that Steve Rogers survived the explosion and was being held prisoner by HYDRA. Bucky helped Steve into the Hydra Stomper armor and used a generator to power the suit. Hydra Stomper then went into the laboratory to help Peggy fight the Champion of HYDRA. Howard attempted to use the control panel to close the portal. However, Howard told Peggy that the portal wouldn't close because the creature was holding it open. As Peggy started to push the creature back the Hydra Stomper armor lost all power. Steve exited the armor and begged Peggy not to go through the portal. However, Peggy told Steve that it was the only way to stop the Champion of HYDRA. As Peggy entered the portal it closed behind her, leaving Steve and Howard alone in the laboratory.
