History

The group found out that Jean Grey had become possessed by the Phoenix Force. They tried to manipulate Jean into become a member to use her power for their own gain. It briefly worked and she became the Black Queen, helping them defeat her teammates on the X-Men. However, the Phoenix power became too much and she defeated the Inner Circle.

Background

The first version of the team outside the comics.

The name was changed from the Hellfire Club due to concerns over the name in a children's series, similar to the Insidious Six on Spider-Man. In the comics, the Inner Circle was just the high ranking members of the Hellfire Club. As of Marvel Anime: X-Men, all animated versions of the team have been called Inner Circle Club.

In the Comics

The group was founded to obtain and exert power through politics and economic influence instead of outward conquest and domination. It has been involved in wars and assassinations to further the agendas of the Club's most powerful members.

Howard Stark was offered membership but he was only interested in the group's parties.

While a probationary member, Sebastian Shaw helped a White King revive the Sentinel program.

Jason Wyngarde was actually the longtime X-Men villain Mastermind. He was given probationary membership on the condition that he could recruit Phoenix. In the series, Phoenix reveals Jason's true identity though this does not have the impact from the comics as he was not shown before the Dark Phoenix Saga.

The group used connections to Robert Kelly to have Shaw's company manufacture Sentinels.

Emma Frost ran the Massachusetts Academy, a dark rival to the X-Men. She tried to recruit several members who became X-Men like Kitty Pryde and Firestar.

Shaw was voted out and Magneto joined under the title of Grey King. He abandoned the group after he found Rogue in the Savage Land.

Magneto and Storm briefly held the shared title of White King. Storm joined as part of a joint effort between the Hellfire Club and X-Men to battle Nimrod.

Captain Britain briefly joined when he worked with Shaw to investigate mutual objectives.

Other characters who joined the club include Trevor Fitzroy, Jean Grey's clone Madelyne Pryor, Holocaust, Sunspot, Black Tom Cassidy, Robert Kelly, and Norman Osborn.

Characters who have inherited membership due to family include Angel, Pyslocke, Iron Man, and Rachel Summers.

Sabretooth was an associate of the group but not a member.

Cannonball worked for the group as a guard.
