Bobby Drake was born to William and Madeline Drake on Port Jefferson Station, Long Island, New York. He is Jewish on his mother's side and Irish-Catholic on his father's. Bobby's powers first manifested when he was on a date with Judy Harmon. When the local bully, Rocky Beasely, tried to take Judy away by force, Bobby froze Rocky in a block of ice. Bobby was later approached by Professor X and offered him a spot on the X-Men which Bobby accepted and took the codename Iceman. Bobby was the second person that Professor X had recruited to the X-Men preceded by Cyclops. ("There's No Business Like Snow Business")

When Mister Sinister attacked New York City the X-Men arrived to stop him. Sinister threatened to use a device he created called the Genetic Mutation Cleansing Ray to turn all of the X-Men into normal humans. Wanting to lead a normal life Beast tried to goad Sinister into using the device on him. However, Iceman arrived and flash froze Mister Sinister in ice. The ray accidentally activated and hit Iceman taking away his powers. Now unable to be part of the X-Men Bobby began hosting his own television talk show which became one of the highest rated shows on television. Jealous of his success Beast attempted to sabotage Bobby and burned down his studio. However, Beast was still jealous when he realized that Bobby was still famous even without his talk show or super powers. ("There's No Business Like Snow Business")
