I Am Groot is a television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is the second animated series set in the MCU after What If...?.

Background[]

On December 10, 2020, during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, Kevin Feige announced that a series of shorts featuring Groot, along with several new and unusual characters, was in development for Disney+.[1]

On April 28, 2021, James Gunn revealed that the series of shorts would be animated.[2]

On August 11, 2021, Brad Winderbaum revealed that the series would feature a photo-realistic animation style.[3]

On June 5, 2022, Marvel announced on their Twitter page that I Am Groot would premier on August 10, 2022.[4]

On July 14, 2022 the El Captain Theatre in Los Angeles announced on their Twitter page that the I Am Groot short "Magnum Opus" would be shown exclusively at their theater before showings of Thor: Love and Thunder from July 18 to July 24.[5]

It was initially reported that I Am Groot would consist of five short episodes.[6] However, it was later revealed that the series had been given five additional episodes, bringing the total episode count up to ten.[7] The second season premiered on Disney+ on September 6, 2023.

Story[]

Baby Groot goes on adventures with new and unusual characters.

Continuity[]

In an interview James Gunn said that I Am Groot was "canon unto themselves"[8] implying that the series takes place outside the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. However, in a later interview Marvel Studios head of streaming Brad Winderbaum said that I Am Groot takes place between the final scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 before the credits start to roll and the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 post credit scene that shows Groot as a teenager. Winderbaum described this as a narrow window of time.[9]
