Hit Monkey is a series from Marvel Animation. The series is the first to focus on the character, his first animated appearance, and first television appearance.
Background[]
The series was announced on February 11th, 2019 at the Television Critics Association press tour. It was released along with M.O.D.O.K., intending to lead up to the crossover series The Offenders. This will be similar to Marvel Studios's Netflix series. It would have included Howard the Duck and Tigra & Dazzler before their cancellation which also ended The Offenders.
The series is written by Josh Gordon and Will Speck. Gordon, Speck, and Jeph Loeb are executive producers. However, following the initial announcement Loeb was forced out of Marvel and his name has not been attached to any further announcements.
The series follows Hit Monkey, a wronged Japanese snow monkey who was mentored by the ghost of an American assassin, as he cuts his way through the Tokyo underworld.[1]
Gordon said of the series, "We first read Hit-Monkey about eight years ago, not long after it was published, and we were immediate fans. To us it's one of the best origin stories for any Marvel character ever."
Speck added, "When we met with Jeph and everyone at Marvel, we could tell right away that they just wanted to make something that swung for the fences. That's all you’re looking for, partners who want to make the weirdest stuff possible."[2]
Story[]
The show follows a Japanese snow macaque whose clan meets a stranded hitman named Bryce and nurses him back to health. However, after Bryce dies the titular simian follows in the assassin's footsteps to seek vengeance, while guided by Bryce's ghost.
Josh Gordon said of the character, "He's a character who is violent and temper amental but also deeply wounded and innocent."
