-Peter Parker

"Look. I don't talk this around down at the station but I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out who he is or what side he's on. I don't know all the answers but I do known one thing. "You both look good in skin tight outfits?"

-Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker

"Ya, I get it now too. Thanks for helping me make sense out of my life, Uncle Ben. Spider-Man's life too."

-Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker inner monologue

Trivia

  • Mysterio tells Spider-Man to follow the yellow brick road, a reference to the film The Wizard of Oz. The original book used gold instead of just yellow.
  • Spider-Man says he feels like a certain coyote, a reference to Looney Tunes character Wile E. Coyote. He would often create paintings on rocks, forget they were rocks or see Road Runner go into them and try to follow only to hurt himself.
  • Spider-Man talks about peasants with torches coming after him, a reference to the classic Universal Monster movies.
  • Terri Lee's computer reveals that Quentin Beck received a one-year prison sentence.

Goofs

  • At the beginning of the episode in the museum scene, where security officers are investigating the break-in, one of the guards appears unintentionally extremely tall and bulky, before shrinking as he walks through another guard.
  • When Mysterio is on the bridge as a crowd is cheering him on, a person in the crowd randomly appears out of thin air.
  • Quentin Beck's police file misspells "New York" as "New Yock", and "felony endangerment" as "feiuney endangerm[ent]".
  • Spider-Man reads Beck's address from the police file, Wonder Studios, but the police file does not appear to include info on his address.

Continuity

  • First appearance of Mysterio, and the only episode where he is featured as the central villain, since his other appearances are either as part of the Insidious Six or as an anti-hero.
  • The first time Spider-Man recites his origin in Spider-Man. This is repeated in brief flashbacks throughout the series bar a more prolonged, extensive coverage of his origin shown in "Make a Wish".
  • The first time the phrase "with great power comes great responsibility" is used.
  • Quentin Beck getting "ruined" by Spider-Man on the Brooklyn Bridge is also shown in this episode, in flashback. The event would later be explored further in "The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson" and Miranda Wilson would be revealed to have been involved in the scenario.
  • Mysterio is sent to jail in this episode for the second time. He is later broken out in "The Insidious Six".

Background

The episode is based on The Amazing Spider-Man #13, which is subtitled "The Menace of...Mysterio!". It was previously adapted for Spider-Man as "The Menace of Mysterio".

Reaction

Comic Book Resources ranked this as the fourteenth top episode of the series. They noted how the episode showed how Spider-Man is dedicated to fighting for good even when everyone is against him. They pointed to scenes showing Jameson, Aunt May, and the people of New York turning against him but he kept fighting because it was the right thing to do.[1]
