Harry Osborn gets caught up in the war between Norman Osborn and Kingpin after he is kidnapped by the mysterious Hobgoblin.

Story[]

A mysterious brown-skinned bald figure putting on a yellow mask and flying out of a building on a jet glider. Peter Parker is surprised when Harry Osborn, the son of OsCorp Industries founder Professor Norman Osborn and the friend of the school bully Flash Thompson, offers Peter to be his new roommate at an apartment near Central Park. Peter decides to think about it, while taking photos for The Daily Bugle at the announcement of the new Fisk School of Criminology by Wilson Fisk and Norman Osborn. Suddenly, Peter sees a cloaked yellow and orange goblin-like figure flying down towards Fisk on a bat-shaped jet glider. He pulls out a laser gun and attempts to shoot and kill Fisk, but Peter saves Fisk right before it can hit him. As panic begins in the crowd and police arrive, Peter changes himself into his Spider-Man costume and swings into an air-battle with the mysterious flying masked assassin figure in the air heights of the New York City sky. The battle eventually ends when Spider-Man nearly collides with a plane and narrowly survives a large fall from a building, but hears the strange flying criminal maniac gives his name as Hobgoblin.

As Norman Osborn returns to his home laboratory at OsCorp, he is confronted by the Hobgoblin whom he starts an argument with, revealing that Norman hired Hobgoblin to assassinate Fisk by giving him a costume and weapons and that Norman knows his real secret identity. Norman tells Hobgoblin that he failed his mission and threatens to fire him, but Hobgoblin argues he would have succeeded without Spider-Man stopping him.

At home, Peter discusses with his aunt May Parker about whether moving out and room-mating with Harry is a good idea. Aunt May tells him that all young people need to move out one day, and also tells him that his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson is moving out with some of her friends and her Aunt Anna Watson will be moving into Aunt May's place, thus encouraging Peter. so Peter takes her advice and moves in with Harry at the apartment in Central Park.

that night, Hobgoblin sneaks into the Empire State Building and finds the secret lair of Wilson Fisk and his sidekick Alistair Smythe. Hobgoblin tells Fisk that he wants money and revenge on Norman Osborn, prompting Fisk to hire Hobgoblin for a job and orders him to kidnap Harry to get Osborn payback. Hobgoblin breaks into Peters and Harry's apartment and sets off explosives, kidnapping Harry and knocking Aunt May unconscious, whilst even managing to payback Peter. Fisk tells what Hobgoblin has done to Norman, and want his inventions in exchange for Harry.

Hobgoblin later has a secret conversation with Norman Osborn and asks him for another weapon so he can secretly betray Fisk, as part of a plan to double-cross Osborn. so Osborn gives Hobgoblin a new larger remote-controlled glider with AI-controlled missiles called "Smart Bombs". this is later broken up by Spider-Man who swings into another air-battle with Hobgoblin to avenge Aunt May, who is in hospital.

Background[]

This was story editor John Semper, Jr.'s least favorite episode. This was a result of the first story editor, who was removed from the position before the series began. He changed the order of Goblin appearances, in the comics it was Green Goblin who showed up first and Hobgoblin did not show up until after Norman's death. Avi Arad already put a Hobgoblin action figure into production when Semper was hired. Semper wanted the original comic book order, but Arad overrode him and Green Goblin did not show up until season three's "Enter the Green Goblin".

In original plans of the series Norman Osborn was supposed to become Hobgoblin, but this idea was scrapped by Stan Lee.
