The X-Men make one last final stand against Sentinels in both Present and Future, and Emma makes a choice that could mean the end of her existence. (Series Finale)

Story[]

The Sentinels have arrived in downtown New York City, Wolverine orders Beast and the X-Men to help destroy them, while he continues following a trail to Emma Frost.

Back in the Inner Circle's mansion, Selene stops draining Cyclops's life force per Emma Frost's orders. Cyclops tells them not to cope with bringing the Phoenix, that is until Selene tells them why this whole thing really started.

Emma Frost was ordered to steal the Phoenix by subduing Professor X, but instead Jean Grey turns into the Phoenix and stops this process.

As a result, Emma transports Xavier to quickly to Genosha in order to earn the trust of the X-men.

Regardless, the Inner Circle continues with releasing the Phoenix.

Wolverine is quickly given a message to Xavier to trust Emma Frost, but the message isn't sent all the way resulting in the Future X-Men to fend for themselves.

Inside Jean's mind, she is influenced by both avatars of her father and Xavier to unleash it before illusions of Magneto's Brotherhood get it first. Quickly she opens it and the Phoenix consumes the Cuckoos whole turning them all into the Phoenix.

Wolverine comes by to the mansion only to stopped by Leland and Pierce.

Emma pleads to Shaw that the force is too unstable to control, ignoring her, Sebastian orders the girls to complete the future holocaust: Destroy the X-Men and Sentinels then turn Genosha into an ash-like wasteland.

The Phoenix destroys half of the mansion, with Emma incapacitating the surviving Inner Circle members, she then tends to Cyclops and kisses him and she really does show emotion for him, but is stopped by the recovered Jean Grey who wants some payback. She is stopped by Cyclops and confront the Phoenix but not before Jean plans to entrap it within her. Emma is left behind, but little do they know Wolverine arrives a little too late is told by Emma to cut her lose and trust her.

In downtown NYC, the X-Men destroy most of the Sentinels but it is Magneto's Sentinel that defeats Beast in his tracks.

In the future, the Future X-Men lead a brave assault on Master Mold's fortress, but then are left with a blockade when Wolverine is electrocuted by Mold's forcefield, then Polaris and Marrow show up and destroy the entirety of the Sentinels, Marrow apologizes in the process.

Finally, Master Mold emerges standing taller than any of her creations and creates a tornado to consume and kill the X-Men.

Back in the present, the Phoenix shows up and destroys all of the remaining Sentinels and forces Magneto to be saved by his sudden change of thought son Quicksilver. Quicksilver is told to take him back to Genosha finally realizing his plans have gone into waste and there is no point in fighting anymore.

The Phoenix continues the warpath on the X-Men, but then Jean shows up and gives herself up, only for Cyclops to save her at a last second shouting: "I'M NOT LOSING YOU AGAIN!"

The Phoenix nearly kills Cyclops but is saved yet again by Emma Frost who urges the X-Men to get Jean out of the area. Wolverine lets Emma do what she needs. Emma's body begins to crack and shine with her finals words: "Scott forgive me." She bursts like cocoon and the Phoenix emerges but dissipates seemingly dead much to the X-Men's relief. Jean and Cyclops embrace but Scott turns around still looking the endless shattered Diamonds fall to the ground like rain.

In the aftermath, Magneto admits to surviving people of Genosha that everything he did was for the good of all Mutants, but Scarlet Witch denies who looks to be new leader denies such excuse and banishes both him and Pietro. The survivors leave and begin to rebuild their paradise lost like city.

In the mansion, Rogue and Logan reconcile with each other, and along with the rest of the X-Men meet up with Charles Xavier who is quite alive and well.

He congratulates them all, not only to stopping the Sentinels but the averting of the future and the Phoenix's hunger for destruction believing the ended the war before it began. While it seems, he patting them on the back for their victory, it may be premature as Xavier then says his final words with: "I fear our fight has only begun."

The scene pans from his mansion to a populated New York City, hundreds, thousands if not millions of mutants, gather at this big event, with weird looking blue pyramids ones all over the city and others floating in the air.

Then another bizarre scene in one of these pyramids, as the crowd shouts Apocalypse, showing up is different looking Mister Sinister and Cyclops, working with each other and behind them is Apocalypse raising his hands like a world leader and then the crowd roars ending the episode.

  • In the final scene before the episode ends, Iceman was the only X-Man not seen with the rest of the X-men when they all met up with Charles Xavier in the astral plane.

Continuity[]

Background[]

This was the final episode of the series as the producers had difficulty financing another season despite relatively high ratings. It was rumored that this was due to an ongoing feud between Marvel Entertainment and 20th Century Fox, who at the time owned the film rights to the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and their related properties. At the same time, the X-Men saw decreasing relevance in the comics. This was eventually resolved when The Walt Disney Company purchased both Marvel and Fox.
