Story

During the rescue of the X-Men and Brotherhood from Area 51, Mystique is left behind and trapped by Scott after she refused to reveal the whereabouts of Professor X. In Area 51, scientists are running tests on Mystique. After she incapacitates a female scientist, and following a series of close calls, she escapes in the form of a crow.

At the Institute, the X-Men are working on getting the house restored. As Logan and Scott work on fixing a satellite dish, Jean and Ororo work on a fountain. Each become distracted by glances at one another and Storm notes how close they've become in the past year. When Logan tells Scott that he'll offer to talk to Jean, Scott says he will. A crow (Mystique in disguise) claws at Scott and flies off.

Before Scott and Jean try to admit their feelings to each other, Alex calls, telling Scott that he's stranded in Mexico and is unable to contact his adopted parents. Scott travels to Mexico, but not before telling Jean they'll talk later. When he arrives in Mexico, it turns out that Alex was in fact a disguised Mystique, who gases Scott.

After regaining consciousness, Scott wakes up in the desert without his glasses. He wanders around blind all day and when night falls, he is attacked by wolves. At the institute, Jean wakes from a nightmare, telling the Professor she fears that Scott is in danger. Professor X tells Jean that Scott is well out of his psychic range, even for him, and comforts her. In the desert, Scott uses his optic blasts the fight the wolves, which is witnessed by oil rig workers. He ends up getting knocked unconscious after falling down a hill, but is saved in time. As the workers drive away with Scott, Mystique watches them, displeased and follows them in the form of an eagle.
