Centuries ago, China was ruled by the Mandarin. Seeking immortality, he sought the help of the Deities of Death. They gave them the five Demon Elementals who then slaughtered all his subjects. His temple was consumed by the Earth as he died.

In modern times, Tony Stark and James Rhodes began uncovering the temple. However, they set in motion a series of events that caused Mandarin to be reborn in his ancestor Li Mei. Tony built himself a series of armors to become Iron Knight and defeated Mandarin.
