Prior to Peter Parker's death no one knew who Spider-Man really was. Because of this when Marvel Comics started publishing their own Spider-Man comics they gave Spider-Man the secret identity of Billy Barker.

Although the name Billy Barker was never said in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, eagle eyed viewers will see that a dialogue bubble on an issue of True Life Tales of Spider-Man reads "Though the world may mock Billy Barker the timid teenager it will soon marvel at the awesome might of Spider-Man."
